The most beautiful regions of Australia for a motorhome holiday:
General information
We give you the chance to compare our various partners: Maui, Britz, Star RV and Apollo.
Petrol and diesel
Petrol and diesel cost almost the same, between AUD 1.50 and 1.50/l depending on the region.
Campsites
Australia has a large number of good campsites. A standard pitch costs between AUD 40 and AUD 60 per night for two people and one vehicle. ‘Big 4 Holiday Parks’ is an Australian association with over 130 parks for caravans and campervans. Most of them have a swimming pool and offer excellent service. Many of these campsites also have small furnished cabins. When you pick up your vehicle, you will receive all the information you need.
Shopping
Most shops are open from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:30 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00. In the larger towns you will also find supermarkets that open on Sundays. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Vehicle size
Campervans and motorhomes come in various sizes, from compact vans for two people and rugged 4x4s to luxurious vehicles with all the comforts of a home on wheels. Even if a vehicle’s dimensions seem right for you, take care not to choose a model that is too small. If there are several of you, for example, it is better to choose a campervan designed for one more person. These vehicles are suitable for all types of road and are very easy to handle.
Child seats – important
In Australia, child seats are compulsory and may only be fitted to seats that are attached to the vehicle chassis. Fitting them to seats attached to the bodywork (such as the middle seat in the driver’s cab with a lap belt) is not permitted. Child seats from Switzerland may not be used. Baby seats (under 3 years) and child seats (from 3 to 8 years) must be reserved in advance. When booking, please let us know your child’s age and weight so that we can reserve the right seat.
voyageplan package
In partnership with Allianz, voyageplan offers motorhome, campervan or car hire with no excess, which also covers damage to tyres and windscreen. This package is based on standard insurance with the excess reduced to 0.00. All other conditions and options are calculated on the basis of the standard insurance. Price per day: CHF 14. Validity: maximum 92 days from the start of the rental.
Communication
You can use your mobile phone in Australia. For longer stays, we recommend buying a local SIM card.
Personal equipment
Soft bags are better suited as luggage than hard-shell suitcases, which take up a lot of space. If you return your vehicle to the same place where you picked it up, you can sometimes leave part of your luggage there, provided it does not take up too much room. However, the rental company should be informed in advance.
SPECIAL
When you book a campervan or motorhome with voyageplan, you benefit from the following: a free road atlas worth CHF 35 (Australian roads and tracks on over 160 pages, with detailed routes and GPS coordinates).
Taxes
In Australia, a tax (VAT) is levied on goods and services (GST = Goods and Services Tax). This tax is already included in our prices in Swiss francs. If you buy goods worth more than AUD 300 locally and want to take them home with you, you can reclaim the tax at customs.
Traffic
In Australia, you drive on the left. Wearing a seat belt is compulsory. There is little traffic in rural areas, and people there generally drive more carefully than in Europe. Some roads are narrow and winding, so it is best to plan fairly short stages.
Insurance
The rental company’s general terms and conditions contain all the information on insured damage, excess, sums insured, etc. There you will also find details of the additional insurance options and what they cover.
Important
Please note that in the event of an accident, the excess will be charged to your credit card and refunded to you by Allianz after your return to Switzerland (once the formalities have been completed and the necessary documents submitted). This can take several months. Please also note that the deposit will be charged to your credit card when you pick up the vehicle (mind your credit limit!) and refunded when you return it (any exchange rate differences are borne by the customer).
