Here, mighty mountains rise up from the tundra, which is largely covered in coniferous forest. Two of the region’s four national parks – Nahanni National Park and Wood Buffalo National Park – have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. They are popular destinations for excursions in the Northwest Territories, as is the Waterfalls Route, which takes travellers from waterfall to waterfall over more than 400 kilometres.
In north-western Canada, photography enthusiasts will find impressive, breathtaking wildlife: black bears and grizzlies roam the forests, caribou cross the vast plains in huge herds, and musk oxen nibble on the lichens and mosses of the tundra. All kinds of nature experiences unfold right before your eyes. In autumn and winter, the Northern Lights dance across the sky, bathing the evening horizon in a mystical light. As soon as the snow falls, you can reach the most idyllic viewpoints on snowshoes, by dog sled or by snowmobile. In the summer months, your excursions in the Northwest Territories leave even more time for outdoor activities. Paddle a kayak on some of Canada’s largest lakes and rivers and encounter elk and other wildlife along the shore.
