As soon as you arrive, you will spot the best place from which to discover the city: the Calgary Tower. Part of the observation deck of the 190-metre tower has a glass floor, offering a dizzying experience high above the city’s rooftops. The Sky 360 restaurant revolves, so you can relax over lunch or dinner and take in the city from every angle.
Stroll around the area and discover the pubs and bars of downtown Calgary. One18Empire is considered the best whisky bar in town – and one look at the menu confirms it straight away: more than 100 different whiskies and even refined dishes prepared with the spirit. If the Calgary Flames NHL team happens to be playing, a visit to a sports bar is a real experience. Canadians love their national sport, and watching the games with friends in public places is simply part of life here.
A city tour of Calgary usually begins in front of the historic City Hall and continues to Olympic Plaza, the heart of the Olympics during the 1988 Winter Games. In winter an ice rink is set up here. On the other side of the city, in Olympic Park, the ski jumps still bear witness to this global event. On the bobsleigh track, visitors can even climb into a bobsleigh and hurtle down the narrow, icy run with an experienced pilot. Those who prefer shopping to adrenaline will sooner or later end up in the architecturally striking ‘The Core’ shopping centre.
Calgary is not only worth a visit in winter. Above all during the famous Calgary Stampede in July, visitors flock from all over the world to experience the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’. Throughout the ten days of the rodeo festival, countless events take place all over the city. A true Wild West experience!
