The bone-chilling roar of a hungry lion wakes you from your sleep – a little abruptly, admittedly.
Yet the wake-up call comes just in time for the impressive spectacle you can follow in comfort
from your veranda at Mombo Camp in Botswana: on the horizon, the first rays of sunlight tickle the sky and set it aglow in a breathtaking red. Enough to send a shiver down any adventurer’s spine.
From Mombo Camp, in the heart of the Okavango Delta on Chief’s Island, you look straight out over one of the richest wildlife regions in Southern Africa. The reserve is a playground for young elephants and numerous big cats, and is ideal for wilderness safaris and wildlife viewing.
Mombo Camp has a total of nine luxury tents, each with an indoor and outdoor shower and a lounge with a daybed. The heart of the camp is the main lodge with its large veranda, made up of several tents. This is where you will find the dining room, a lounge and the pool; hidden behind trees and branches rising from the ground lies the boma. Here, beneath the starry sky, traditional dinners and convivial evenings around the campfire take place.
The camp lies in the middle of the Moremi Game Reserve, one of the best places for wildlife viewing in Southern Africa. On game drives in open safari vehicles you explore the savannah and the floodplains, which are teeming with animals. As the area is completely surrounded by water, the density of wildlife is particularly high. Chief’s Island is currently the only place in Botswana where you can see the Big 5. Elephants, lions and buffalo are easy to spot, while rhinos or even leopards call for a particularly keen eye. And if you are lucky enough to come face to face with one of these majestic big cats for the first time, savour every second of the moment! Don’t reach for your camera straight away – this experience is unforgettable and worth more than any photo.
