Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island. It was best known for its beautiful cathedral, which was sadly destroyed in the 2011 earthquake. As interim solutions, the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’ (made of cardboard) and the new ‘RE:Start’ shopping district, housed entirely in shipping containers, were created. Besides these new sights, you can take a short boat trip on the Avon River, ride the gondola up the nearby extinct volcano or visit the Canterbury Museum.
