Itinerary
Queensland's Hinterland

Days 1 - 2 Brisbane – Glass House Mountains (approx. 85 km) After collecting your vehicle, you drive to the Glass House Mountains, whose steep volcanic peaks rise from the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast and are perfect for walking.

Days 3 - 4 Glass House Mountains – Bundaberg (approx. 320 km) Today you drive to Bundaberg, home of Bundaberg Rum. Visit the rum distillery or the ‘Mon Repos Turtle Centre’, where turtles lay their eggs from November to March.

Day 5 Bundaberg – Rockhampton (approx. 300 km) Today you drive via Gladstone to Rockhampton, the centre of the cattle industry. Pay a visit to the Capricorn Caves, not far from Rockhampton.

Days 6 - 7 Rockhampton - Eungella N.P. (approx. 420 km) The journey continues north to Eungella National Park, which surprises visitors with its lush tropical rainforests and a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. On one of the many walking trails you can observe endemic wildlife and, with a little luck, even the platypus in its natural habitat.

Days 8 - 9 Eungella N.P. – Charters Towers (approx. 490 km) After your stay in the coastal national park, you head back inland to Charters Towers. For many years this was a gold-rush town, and traces of that era can still be seen today.

Days 10 - 11 Charters Towers – Undara (approx. 380 km) You continue through vast farmland to Undara Volcanic National Park with its 164 or so extinct volcanoes. On a morning guided tour you learn more about the volcanic landscape and how the lava tubes were formed. Later in the afternoon, a tour introduces you to the park’s wildlife, rounded off by a beautiful sunset.

Days 12 - 13 Undara – Atherton Tablelands (approx. 195 km) The journey takes you to the Atherton Tablelands, which are also volcanic in origin. The impressive rainforests lie mainly on the steep slopes that fall away towards the coast. The Atherton Tablelands offer wonderfully varied landscapes and a diverse culture, as well as attractions such as Crater Lakes National Park with its two crater lakes, Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine.

Day 14 Atherton Tablelands – Cairns (approx. 80 km) On the final stage, stop at Curtain Fig National Park to admire its gigantic fig trees. You then reach Cairns, where your self-drive tour comes to an end.
