Wide sandy beaches have always made for popular seaside resorts – and Plettenberg Bay, whose beach stretches along the Garden Route, is no exception. The bay is sheltered from ocean storms by the small peninsula of the Robberg Nature Reserve, so the water is usually very calm. This is appreciated not only by bathers but also by seals, while dolphins, humpback whales and southern right whales enjoy the tranquillity along the twelve-kilometre beach too.
The town stretches from the Robberg Nature Reserve to the Keurboom and Bitou rivers. Locals and holidaymakers alike have made it a sporting hotspot – after all, the glorious fine sandy beach is perfect for jogging and swimming. On top of that, there are plenty of other water sports: diving, kitesurfing and kayaking are all popular in Plettenberg Bay. Holidaymakers also take the opportunity to head out to sea and visit the seal colonies.
The accommodation is just as varied – there is something for every taste, whether you are travelling on a budget or love a touch of luxury. As well as good restaurants in town, there are two golf courses, nature parks and Africa’s largest polo estate. A hike around the Robberg Peninsula is also well worthwhile.
