One of the most popular destinations in Southern Africa is the Garden Route. It begins in Swellendam and leads via Mossel Bay and the Storms River in Tsitsikamma National Park to Port Elizabeth, where the route ends.

The coastline is particularly impressive: idyllic bays, mighty, rugged cliffs, endless sandy beaches and, behind them, evergreen rainforest. Numerous rivers rise in the country’s mountains and flow into the Indian Ocean.

The Garden Route owes its name to the country’s history: the first settlers called the fertile region the ‘Garden of Eden’.

What can I experience on a self-drive tour along the Garden Route?

Days 1 and 2: Cape Town (approx. 20 km)

After arriving in Cape Town, you pick up your hire car. Discover the beautiful metropolis on the Cape. Overnight stay at the SunSquare Hotel (Standard), the Cape Grace (Deluxe) or similar.

Days 3 and 4: Franschhoek (approx. 80 km)

Today you drive to the Franschhoek wine region. Visit a wine estate and taste some exquisite wines. Overnight stays at the Boschendal Cottages (Standard), the Grande Provence (Deluxe) or similar.

Day 5: Oudtshoorn (approx. 375 km)

Today you drive over magnificent passes and through picturesque valleys to Oudtshoorn. You have the opportunity to visit an ostrich farm or the Cango Caves. Overnight stay at the De Zeekoe Guest House (Standard), the Surval Boutique Hotel (Deluxe) or similar.

Days 6 and 7: Knysna (approx. 160 km)

The journey continues over the Outeniqua Pass and via George to Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The region offers a wealth of sights along the coast. Overnight stays at the Protea Hotel Knysna Quays (Standard), The Plettenberg (Deluxe) or similar.

Days 8 and 9: Grahamstown (approx. 355 km)

On the way to your private game reserve near Port Elizabeth, you pass through the endemic forests of Tsitsikamma. You spend the next two nights in one of the most beautiful private game reserves in the Cape region: Kariega Main Lodge (Standard), Kwandwe Private Game Reserve (Deluxe) or similar.

Day 10: Port Elizabeth (approx. 140 km)

Drive to Port Elizabeth and return your hire car. End of the trip or individual extension.
