Day 1 Hobart – Port Arthur (approx. 95 km) After picking up your hire car, you leave Tasmania’s largest city and drive south-east through charming countryside to the Tasman Peninsula. Once in Port Arthur, you can explore the open-air museum and the historic buildings of the former convict settlement on foot – it tells the eventful story of Port Arthur’s past.
Days 2 - 3 Port Arthur – Freycinet N.P. (approx. 205 km) Passing Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen near Eaglehawk Neck, you follow the coast to Freycinet National Park, where you spend two nights. We recommend the walk to the Wineglass Bay Lookout.
Day 4 Freycinet N.P. – Launceston (approx. 280 km) Today you drive along the east coast via Bicheno, St Helens and the cascading St Columba Falls to Launceston. Stop in Bicheno to watch the resident penguins and the water-spouting blowhole. A short walk then takes you to St Columba Falls. In Launceston, your destination for the day, Cataract Gorge is well worth a visit, as wallabies are often seen there.
Days 5 - 6 Launceston – Cradle Mountain N.P. (approx. 155 km) Your journey takes you through farmland into the mountains of Cradle Mountain National Park. The national park is considered one of the best walking areas in Australia, and the two-hour walk around Dove Lake is suitable for all fitness levels. Who knows – you might even spot a wild wombat along the way.
Days 7 - 8 Cradle Mountain N.P. – Strahan (approx. 150 km) You continue your journey via Rosebery and Zeehan towards the west coast. Not far from Strahan, where you spend two nights, the 30 m high Henty Dunes, which stretch for 15 km along the coast, are well worth a stop. Enjoy a boat trip on the famous Gordon River, often as smooth as glass, through impressive flora and fauna, and visit the convict settlement on Sarah Island, where the boat turns and heads back to Strahan.
Day 9 Strahan – Hamilton (approx. 235 km) Today a winding road awaits you through the national park area. Turn off at Derwent Bridge for Lake St Clair to take a break and go for a stroll before reaching Hamilton, your destination for the day.
Day 10 Hamilton – Hobart (approx. 80 km) On the way back to Hobart, a stop at Mt Field National Park with its famous Russell Falls and swamp gums is well worthwhile. Your trip ends in Hobart, where you return your hire car.
