Self-drive tours in Namibia

SAFE YET ADVENTUROUS: EXPLORING NAMIBIA BY HIRE CAR

Namibia is simply breathtaking: fascinating wildlife and plant life, endless deserts, rugged mountains and a wild coastline. The country also has a great deal to offer culturally and is particularly rewarding to explore by hire car – because that is the only way to plan your route exactly as you wish. The voyageplan specialists carefully select the lodges, guesthouses and guest farms for you.

Set off for Africa’s most beautiful country and experience its fascination – sometimes on well-maintained tarred roads, sometimes on gravel tracks. In the dry season, the latter can be driven even without four-wheel drive. Namibia is very well signposted and, thanks to its equally good infrastructure, is also an ideal self-drive destination for ‘first-timers’.

What can you expect on your journey through Namibia?
Here we describe a sample tour from the interior to the Atlantic – a journey on which you get to know the country from every angle:

Days 1 - 4: The region richest in wildlife
A week and a half is set aside for Namibia, and there is no better introduction to its impressive natural world than heading first to Etosha National Park. An incredible diversity of flora and fauna awaits you here – the park is one of the richest wildlife reserves in Africa. From Onguma The Fort on the eastern edge of the park, you enjoy a glorious view across the seemingly endless land. From here you look out over the busy waterhole with beautiful zebras, giraffes, elephants and many of the country’s other animals. Along the unique salt pan, you continue to the south of the park. At Ongava Tented Camp you head out on game drives with experienced rangers in open off-road vehicles – a unique opportunity to learn a great deal about wildlife and nature.

Days 5 - 6: The fascination of rock
Next stop: Damaraland with its remarkably varied landscape. Twyfelfontein lies near Mowani Mountain Camp, whose tents blend perfectly into the mountain scenery. It was here that the original inhabitants left what is probably the largest collection of rock paintings in all of Africa.

Days 7 - 8: Relaxing by the sea
On the way to Swakopmund you are instantly captivated by the untouched, solitary landscape with its vast gravel plains. The coastal town itself, between the Atlantic and the Namib Desert, is livelier: stroll along the picturesque promenade and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Particularly recommended: a catamaran cruise in Walvis Bay. In the bay, seals jump on board while dolphins accompany the boat on its way along the lagoon.

Days 9 - 11: Deserts, dunes and astonishing biodiversity
One more short detour to the water, then it’s back to the desert. You stay at Little Kulala Lodge at the gateway to Sossusvlei and its sand dunes, which you can marvel at on a tour. You spend the second night at Wolwedans Boulders Lodge in the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Here, at the foot of the mountains, elegant and comfortable lodges are the starting point for various excursions into one of the largest private nature reserves in Southern Africa.

If you would like to extend your trip in Southern Africa, a few wellness days at a spa resort in Namibia are the perfect solution: after eleven days full of new impressions and exciting encounters with nature, treat yourself to some relaxation. GocheGanas, 45 minutes from Windhoek, has one of the best spas in Southern Africa. Massages are offered under the open sky – afterwards you will never want to leave this wellness oasis.
