Day 1 Nabalasere Waterfall (distance 3 km) Your hiking adventure begins in Suva, where your guide picks you up. You cover the first stage by vehicle, driving north along the Kings Road and then, via Rakiraki, on a dirt road to the small village of Nabalasere. Here the villagers receive you with a welcome ceremony before you set off on foot with your guide and any villagers who would like to come along. You hike through impressive natural surroundings to Nabalasere Waterfall, which offers a welcome chance to cool off after the walk. During the break at the waterfall, you enjoy a cup of ‘Draunimoli’ (lemon tea) and a picnic lunch. After this wonderful first hike, you return to the vehicle and continue to Tavua. Here you once again turn off onto a dirt road leading inland. Shortly afterwards you reach the village where you spend the night. Your host family spoils you with a delicious dinner.
Day 2 Mt Tomaniivi (distance 9 km) After breakfast, the next hike is on the programme. At around 08:30 you begin the ascent of Mount Tomaniivi, accompanied by villagers through this fascinating landscape. Lunch is a picnic on Mount Tomaniivi which, at 1323 metres, is the highest mountain in Fiji. Birdwatchers appreciate the great variety of bird species in this region. After a little refreshment in the village, you are driven to the village of Naga, about 1 hour’s drive further inland. This is your starting point for the next day’s hike.
Day 3 Naga - Nubutautau (distance 12 km) Your luggage is taken ahead to your next accommodation, so you only need to carry your rucksack. Today’s hike offers wonderful views of the river and valley, as well as numerous small pools where you can cool off. You spend the night in Nubutautau, which you reach after a 1.5 km climb.
Day 4 Nubutautau - Navala (distance 21 km) Today’s walk is mostly flat or downhill, with just two short climbs. First you head west at a steady altitude before passing through old villages. At several points along the route you can enjoy an impressive 360° panoramic view over the main island of Viti Levu and the coast. The descent to the ‘Ba’ River is leisurely and can mostly be done in the shade of the trees. As the last part of the descent offers no shade, a refreshing swim in the river is very welcome once you reach its bank. You spend the night at Bulou's Lodge above the village of Navala, run by the friendly Tui.
Day 5 Navala - Suva Today’s stage is not a real hike, just a short stroll with Tui through the village of Navala. Navala is one of the best-known villages in Fiji, as its thatched houses still look just as they did several decades ago. The striking setting amid the Fijian mountains and the magnificent natural surroundings make for wonderful photos. Afterwards, return transfer to Nadi or Suva.
